Negotiating A Car’s Price

August 23, 2011 · Auto Loan Terms, Buying / Selling A Car · Leave a Comment

When you are buying a new car, you can often get a better deal than the seller is listing. You will often find that it is in your best interest to negotiate the price. Even if you are happy with the price the dealer is asking for, you might be able to bargain with them to get it even lower.

You need a game plan if you are going to try to negotiate the price of a car. Don’t expect you can walk into a dealership and blindly start haggling over the price. Do your research ahead of time. Make sure you know what similar models are going for at other dealerships. The dealer may even try to tell you his costs are much higher than they actually are so that you feel you are locked into a price you don’t want to pay. You can call his bluff if you’ve done your research ahead of time.

You are going to need some kind of justification for asking for a lower price. If you can show them a few quotes from other dealers, you should be in a better bargaining position.

The salesperson will likely ask you what you are willing to pay for a vehicle. Never be forward about your budget. The moment you reveal your budget, you will have anchored yourself around the quote you gave him. At that point, it will be nearly impossible to get the salesperson to consider another offer.
When you are talking with a seller, you should be as personable as possible. A dealer is less likely to negotiate when the discussion is awkward or hostile. Stay friendly and they will be more open to lowering the price.

Generally, you don’t want to commit to buying a car the first time you visit a dealer. You are going to want to collect yourself and think about the purchase before making a decision. Also, you need to give the dealer the message that you aren’t sure about the purchase. If he realizes you are still thinking, he may be more inclined to consider a better offer. You will also be less likely to be intimidated by him.

Be calm and confident when you finally make an offer. If a salesperson senses any doubt or uncertainty, he will be more likely to reject your offer. Keep your voice even and steady. Don’t hesitate and show that you really believe your proposal is a fair offer. Car dealers will respect you more when you show you are willing to be assertive. Most dealers are going to try to make it difficult to lower the price. You can at least show that you are on the level with them when negotiating.

No price is final. When you are buying a new vehicle, you can make an offer to get a better deal. It pays to be assertive when you are making a purchase.
